Individualized preventative medicine is available for your horse.  Vaccination, deworming and dentistry can be customized to your horse’s needs. Dental care is an integral part of your horse’s preventative health care program. The recommended vaccination and deworming schedules for the state of Georgia are listed below. In addition, Coggins tests (EIA), health certificates, event permits and microchipping are also offered.

Deworming

In the past, veterinarians and parasitologists recommended a herd-based strategy which instructed owners to deworm every two months and to rotate between dewormers. Recent data, however, indicates that parasites are becoming resistant to our drugs and a more individualized approach is indicated based on bi-annual fecal egg counts.

Coggins test (EIA)

Horner & Nash now performs Coggins test with digital pictures that can be accessed online. The Coggins test checks for Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA), a disease which has no treatment. Consult your veterinarian for state requirements for this blood test. Please provide your current e-mail address for your horse’s Coggins when it is performed. We will need an e-mail address to create your log-in so you can access your Coggins online.

Health Certificates/Event Permits

In addition to a negative Coggins test, a health certificate is also required for interstate travel and must be issued within thirty days of travel. Have your veterinarian check the state regulations before entering into another state, as each state has different requirements. Also, many horse shows now require a health certificate with current influenza and equine herpesvirus (rhinopneumonitis). Please contact the horse show prior to your appointment to confirm if any other information is needed on the health certificate.

Event permits can also be issued. Event permits are good for six months travel to and from equine events in the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. The horse’s negative Coggins must not expire during the six month period. After the examination is performed, the office will submit the request. Please note: It takes up to a month for an event permit request to be issued once submitted. So if you need paperwork for travel to any of the listed states in less than 30 days, a health certificate will need to be performed instead.

Please have a copy of your horse’s current negative Coggins on handwhen the examination for the above certificates is performed. Also have the full address of the final destination, including zip code, ready for all health certificates.

Microchip

Horner & Nash also offers microchipping for your horse. The small microchip stores a unique ID number which identifies your horse for life. This gives you the peace of mind that if your horse is ever lost or stolen, the microchip will identify your horse and quickly reunite you. We use the Microchip ID Equine Protection Registry. After your horse is microchipped, you will need to register your horse online at the address below:
